«» Buzz Words: HDMI 1.3, 1080p, and Upscaling DVD (x:xx)
Short version: None of these are essential technologies (yet), but if you are shopping, keep in mind...
HDMI 1.3: On the audio side, any HD Disc player will decode Dolby TrueHD. As long as you have a recent HDMI 1.1 reciever, you're fine. On the video side, don't hold your breath waiting for the perfect storm of Deep Color and High-res sources and displays. By the time they roll out, you'll be on to your next purchase.
1080p: Whether 1080p will make a difference to you depends not on Screen Size or Seating Distance, but on Screen Size AND Seating Distance. Check this out... or Direct Link To Chart.
Upscaling DVD: It might make a positive difference, or it might not depending on the quality of the scaler in your TV or Receiver. If you're in the market for a new DVD player, try out an upscaling DVD player. If your current player works fine, put your money towards an HD Disc player (if you must...)
