Pros: Good for planes, subways, home recording, keeping roomates happy.
Cons: Not as natural sounding as Open

Rugged, good isolation, tons of bass: Sennheiser 212
Same as 212, more natural bass: Sennheiser EH 250
Better sound, classier looking, but big: Sennheiser HD 280Pro

All 3 of these Senns have REPLACABLE CORDS!! That's a big plus

Open:
Pros: Good for bike riding, jogging, and generaly hear what's happening around you. More natural sound, less "in your head" than closed.
Cons: Bleeds sound, everyone can hear your tunes.

Amazing sound for the $$: Sennheiser PX 100/Sennheiser PMX 100
Even more amazing sound, but large and ugly: Grado SR60

Ear Bud and In Ear Monitors:
Apple Ipod Earbuds: stop using them.
Inexpensive open earbuds w/ volume control: Sennheiser MX 500
